Dear Connie,

I know that my Original Medicare covers visits with my doctor or if I need to go to the emergency room. I’m wondering if they also cover urgent care visits. If it’s not an emergency, I’d like to visit my local Texas MedClinic. But I’m wondering, does Texas Med Clinic accept Medicare?

Curious,
Nancy from San Antonio, Texas

We reached out to Texas MedClinic to answer your question. However, you should always check your plan’s coverage before you seek care at Texas MedClinic. Their list of accepted insurance carriers could change at any time.

Medicare insurance carriers accepted:

  • Aetna, except for Aetna Prime
  • WellMed, including AmeriGroup WellMed, Cigna Healthspring WellMed, and UnitedHealthcare WellMed.
    • If you have one of these plans, it usually indicates that you have a Primary Care Provider (PCP) at a WellMed facility.
  • Cigna, if you have a direct letter of agreement with your employer.

Medicare insurance carriers not accepted:

  • Allwell/Centene/Wellcare.
  • BlueCross BlueShield of Texas.
  • Cigna, unless you have a direct letter of agreement with your employer.
  • ChoiceCare Network (Humana and Humana ChoiceCare).
  • Community First Health Plans.
  • Devoted.
  • Molina.
  • UnitedHealthcare of Texas.
  • No Medicaid plans are accepted.
Agent tip:

“At Texas MedClinic, you may be asked to pay at the time of service. The only exception is for laboratory tests or injected/prescribed medications at the time of your visit.“

Something important to note is that Texas MedClinic does not accept assignments for Medicare claims. This means that you may be asked to pay at the time of service. Texas MedClinic will then file a claim to Medicare for you to be reimbursed.

This is why it’s important to know whether your plan works with Texas MedClinic. You don’t want to be surprised if your plan doesn’t cover the visit and you are never reimbursed.

There is one exception to this rule – laboratory tests or injected/prescribed medications at the time of your visit. If you have any of these services performed, your balance can be billed for any amount that Medicare applies to the deductible or does not pay.
