Dear Connie,

I’ve been trying to lose weight for a long time. I’ve tried diet and exercise. Nothing seems to work for me.

I recently noticed that my friend has lost a lot of weight. I asked her what her secret was, and she said Wegovy. She’s not on Medicare yet, so I’m wondering: does Medicare cover Wegovy? Could this be what helps me shed the pounds?

Eager to be a healthier weight,
Judith from Tampa, Florida

Dear Judith,

Great question. Here’s exciting news: Wegovy has been approved for weight loss. This is a major change.

According to KFF, starting July 1, 2026, eligible Medicare beneficiaries can access Wegovy through a new program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.

What Is Wegovy and How Does It Work?

Wegovy is a prescription medication you inject once a week. These Wegovy injectables contain semaglutide, a member of a class of drugs called GLP-1s.

The medication mimics a natural hormone that signals to your brain that you’re full. You feel less hungry, so you eat less and lose weight over time. Doctors prescribe Wegovy for adults with obesity, a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. It works best alongside healthy meals and regular movement.

How Medicare Covers Wegovy in 2026

For more than 20 years, a federal rule barred Medicare from covering weight-loss drugs. That rule dates back to 2003, when some older diet drugs caused serious health problems. Medical thinking has changed since then. Doctors now treat obesity as a chronic disease, not a willpower problem.

In 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. This temporary program covers Wegovy when your doctor prescribes it for weight loss.

To use the program, you need two things. First, drug coverage through a Medicare Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drugs. Second, your doctor must confirm you meet the program’s health rules.

These rules are based on your BMI and conditions like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and in some cases obesity-related conditions such as sleep apnea. Your doctor will determine whether you meet the program requirements.

What Will You Pay for Wegovy?

Through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, your cost is $50 per month. The program runs from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027.

Without coverage, Wegovy’s cash price ranges from $149 to $699 per month, depending on where you buy it. That can add up to more than $8,000 a year.

One detail to know: your $50 payment stays separate from your other drug costs. It won’t lower your Part D deductible or count toward your yearly drug spending cap ($2,100 in 2026 ).

Agent tip:

“This is a game-changer for many of my clients. The $50 monthly copay makes weight loss medication truly affordable for the first time under Medicare. If you’ve been struggling with weight and have health conditions like diabetes or heart disease, this could be the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for.”

Does Medicare Cover Wegovy for Heart Problems?

Yes. Wegovy received FDA approval in March 2024 to help reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious cardiovascular events in adults with cardiovascular disease who are overweight or have obesity.

Because Wegovy now has an FDA-approved use beyond weight loss, some Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans that include prescription drug coverage may cover Wegovy for eligible beneficiaries with cardiovascular disease. As KFF explains, this FDA approval opened the door for Medicare drug plans to cover Wegovy for qualifying members.

Your costs will depend on your specific plan, but any money you spend on covered Wegovy prescriptions counts toward Medicare’s annual Part D out-of-pocket spending cap of $2,100 in 2026.

Wegovy vs. Ozempic: What’s the Difference?

Both medications contain semaglutide, but they’re approved for different uses. Wegovy treats obesity and protects heart health. Ozempic treats Type 2 diabetes, with weight loss as a side benefit.

This matters for coverage. If you have Type 2 diabetes, your Part D plan may already cover Ozempic. If your goal is weight loss, Wegovy through the Bridge program is the path to ask about.

Bottom Line

Medicare coverage for Wegovy has changed dramatically. Starting July 1, 2026, eligible seniors can access this weight loss medication for just $50 per month through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. This is temporary through December 31, 2027.

If you’ve been struggling with weight management, talk to your doctor about whether you qualify. The approval process is quick (typically one to three business days), and weight loss medications work best when combined with healthy eating, physical activity, and support from your healthcare team.

Your appetite usually returns, and many people regain weight after stopping. Never stop on your own; talk to your doctor first about a plan to keep the weight off.

Does a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan cover Wegovy?
faq collapse icon faq expand icon

No. Medigap plans help pay hospital and doctor costs under Parts A and B. They don’t cover prescription drugs. You need a Part D or Medicare Advantage drug plan for Wegovy.

Can I use a Wegovy savings card with Medicare?

No. Federal rules don’t allow manufacturer discount cards to be combined with Medicare drug coverage. Your $50 copay per month is already the lowest available price.

Is compounded semaglutide covered by Medicare?

No. Medicare only covers the FDA-approved brand, Wegovy. Compounded versions sold online or at med spas are not FDA-approved, and the FDA has warned about safety risks.
